Dr. John Alexander brings a wide variety of experience and expertise to our team. His career in medicine was divided between clinical practice as a surgeon, serving as a consultant, and inventing medical devices. We look forward to working with him at MedSurgPI!
Dr Alexander began his education at Duke University on a football scholarship, which led to an interest in sports medicine and then medical school at Duke. He was given an early internship opportunity which led to cardiac and thoracic surgery training. Dr Alexander spent two years at the Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health in research. Dr Alexander is a committed “Dukie.”
After relocating to Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City, Dr. Alexander spent two years as an attending faculty doing primarily thoracic oncology surgery. Ultimately, he decided to change focus from thoracic surgery to cardiac surgery where he spent the rest of his clinical career. He was Chief of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at West Virginia University, Hackensack University Medical Center and the Evanston Hospital in Evanston Illinois. While in Evanston, Dr Alexander earned an MBA degree from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern. He has been on the clinical faculty at Cornell University, West Virginia University, Northwestern University and University of Chicago. He technically retired in 2012 and moved to North Carolina. Through his connections he was lured out of retirement for two additional stints as clinical faculty at UNC before retiring for the third time in 2018. He is committed to not returning to clinical practice.
Dr. Alexander has worked in the “business” side of medicine in a variety of capacities, including serving on faculty practice plan boards. He developed the practice plan for what has become an 800-member group practice at Evanston Hospital. In addition, he has served as a consultant for Enjoin, a company that provides coding education. He also holds patents or parts of patents for a surgical knife, an off-pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft platform and a percutaneous tricuspid insufficiency treatment method. Most recently Dr. Alexander works for KindHeart a company that makes surgical simulations for minimally invasive surgical device manufacturers, including the surgical robot arena.
Dr. Alexander’s list of favorite pastimes include family, working, traveling and playing golf.
